BoingBoing has a report on a universal constructor that has demonstrated self-replication capability. What I find most interesting, though, is that one of the commenters on the article asks, “Can they do anything other than replicate?”

If I were the RepRap inventors, I’d be tempted to respond with “Can you?”

In fact, some of the most successful species on Earth don’t really do anything other than eat and reproduce. Rats, for instance. So it seems a bit unreasonable to demand anything more from the world’s first von Neumann machine.
