WRAL summarizes Obama’s speech to schoo…

WRAL summarizes Obama’s speech to school kids thusly:

Take responsibility for your education. Go to class and listen. Don’t let failures define you.

That’s the advice President Barack Obama gave schoolchildren Tuesday in a speech that drew fire even before he delivered it.

“We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems,” Obama said. “If you don’t do that – if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.”

That’s pretty much the gist of it. Work hard and don’t fail.

In discussing this with my girlfriend (she started it, I promise!) she mentioned how she had watched it live, with her mom, and they both felt that he came off very stern and lecturing. Like being talked to by the king of all principals.

In particular, she commented that she was ticked off that he addressed everyone as though they were a failure, with no acknowledgement or congratulation to those who were working hard, were getting ahead, were taking the AP classes and planning for college. Essentially, there was no place in this speech for people like her and myself three years ago. Everyone was a worthless slacker.

I actually found myself agreeing with her indignation at going unthanked and being scolded like the rest.
