The real disappointment after the moon landings wasn’t Skylab. It was the six-year period between the last Apollo mission (ASTP, in 1975) and the first Space Shuttle launch (1981), during which the U.S. had no manned space program at all.

And now we’re about to do that again. If we’re lucky, the gap between the last Shuttle mission and the first Constellation launch will be only five years. But the smart money is betting on a longer delay.
