Over at CNet, they ask “Is cloud computing the Hotel California of tech?” (Quick answer: yes and no.) What they mean of course, is that at said Hotel, “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.” In other words, companies will have little incentive to make it easy for you to take all your data and leave.

But, as with any discussion involving the Hotel California, I think there’s a missed point here. Cloud computing isn’t like the Eagles’ song because it’s hard to get your data out once it’s in, it’s like the song because cloud computing means something different to everyone who talks about it.
