The fee to fund Talley got voted down, with 61.6% of students voting ‘no’. On a separate question of whether the renovations should happen, only 43.4% said ‘no’. Essentially, it’s a good idea, but not with our money.

Also of particular note is the turnout: 18.9% of the student body voted in this referendum. To put that in perspective, 3.4% of the student body voted in last year’s fee referendum. That’s an increase by a factor of 5.5. Also, only slightly more people (21.9% of the student body) cast votes last Spring for Student Body President. There is a practical limit to the number of student you can mobilize to vote on any issue, and it’s probably somewhere just shy of 25%. And the Talley issue came darn close to that.
