The Escapist recounts how some folks in the gun community are starting to notice the “Call of Duty Effect”. In short, after a specific models of guns are featured in a game like Call of Duty (in this case, Modern Warfare 2), gamers become aware of them. This causes spikes in web traffic to sites about those guns and inquiries by gamers at gun stores.

My first reaction is to compare games like this to Guitar Hero. There are a lot of bands out there who had their careers launched when they got a song in to the “Indie” section of GH1 or 2. I’ve long expected music labels to begin bidding for slots in the next Rock Band or Guitar Hero game because it’s incredibly lucrative.

So maybe we’ll start seeing Glock and Bushmaster sponsorships in the future? Call of Duty: Smith & Wesson?
